Fed: Downer says JI under pressure but still alive

The federal government says terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah has been put under substantialpressure since the Bali bombings, but remains a significant threat.

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has told ABC Radio that there's a fair way to gobefore the organisation is defeated.

He's called JI the al-Qaeda of South-East Asia and says the organisation's been putunder a lot more pressure since October the 12th -- particularly by the Indonesians.

But Mr DOWNER says other countries in the region, including the Singaporeans, the Malaysians, the Cambodians and the Thais, have also been effective.

He says not all members of JI believe in terrorism as a means of advancing jihad, orholy war, and establishing an Islamic state across South-East Asia.
