Fed: Scientists discover revolutionary new asthma treatment

Australian scientists have discovered a revolutionary new asthma drug to prevent attackswithout side-effects.

Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital Paediatric Research director Professor BRIAN HILLSsays the drug works by forming a protective barrier over airway nerve endings.

He says the barrier stops noxious particles from provoking an attack, mimicking moleculesalready found in healthy lungs and therefore eliminating side effects.

Researchers say the drug could be on the market within two years.

The Queensland Asthma Foundation welcomes the new approach to asthma treatment, butgeneral manager PETER LONSDALE is reluctant to place a value on the discovery.

Meanwhile, Professor HILLS says unfortunately no Australian company is willing to forkout the cash, so the team has been forced to look overseas for a backer.
