Fed: Howard rejects calls for child sex royal commission

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has rejected calls for a royal commission into child sex abuse cases.

Mr HOWARD says he is unwilling to commit the federal government to an inquiry of that scale.

His comments follow a call from Brisbane's Anglican Archbishop PHILLIP ASPINALL fora royal commission into child sex abuse cases.

Dr ASPINALL has struck difficulties setting up his own independent inquiry amid mountingaccusations surrounding Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH, the former Anglican Archbishopof Brisbane.

But Mr HOWARD says it's impossible to set up a royal commission into every issue facingthe country.

He says if there is a group in the community that feels it has something to investigateregarding child abuse in its own ranks, then it should do so itself.

Mr HOWARD says he only received Dr ASPINALL's letter calling for a royal commission this morning.
